THE Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras secured a ticket to the finals after defeating the struggling University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars, 69-49, in the second round of the semifinals in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba-coached Cobras now hold a 4-0 win-loss record in the semis. This also means that even if they will lose in the remaining two matches, they are already secured to play in the best-of-five championship series.
Earlier in the elimination rounds, the Cobras held a clean record of 7-0.
During their match, the Jaguars were off to a good start running their plays and capitalizing on the Cobras' poor defense. The combined offense of Jaguar forwards Miguel Tabaloc, Christian Parker, and Edmundo Bayhonan showed how hungry the USJ-R squad is to grab a win.
Halfway in the 1st quarter, the Cobras only have 4 points from Bernie Bregondo and Adam Mohammed. Mark Panerio nailed a triple with less than a minute to play to cut the lead to 8 points, 15-7.
But the 2nd quarter was a different story for the Jaguars as the Cobras went back to their usual rhythm both in the offensive and defensive departments. Landry Sanjo of the Cobras, who was sidelined in the 1st quarter after a bad fall, came back to dominate the game with 10 points in the period.
The Cobras ended the first half with a 6 point lead, 32-26.
Things went from bad to worse for the Jaguars as they struggle to get their plays and had numerous turnovers when the Cobras employed a trapping defense in the 3rd and 4th quarters.
The Jaguars are yet to win in the remaining two matches. (Buen Josef Andrade/Sunnex)
