MANILA (Updated 11:23 a.m.) -- The state weather bureau placed Cagayan, including Calayan and Babuyan groups of Islands, under public storm warning signal number 1 due to Tropical Storm (TS) Odette. Areas under signal number 1 should expect winds between 30 and 60 kilometers per hour (kph) within the next 36 hours.
At 10 a.m. Tuesday, state weather forecasters spotted TS Odette (Usagi) at 820 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan. The 15th cyclone to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), Odette packs winds of about 65 kph near its center, with gustiness of about 80 kph.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said it is forecast to move west at 7 kph. If it will not accelerate and change its course, it may leave PAR by Sunday.
Pagasa expects TS Odette to be 650 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City by Wednesday morning, and at 450 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City by Thursday morning. The day after that, TS Odette should be 210 kilometers east of Aparri.
Odette carries about 15 to 20 mm per hour rainfall (heavy to intense) within its 350 kilometers diameter.
"Odette is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon that will bring light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas," Pagasa said.
Pagasa is also monitoring another tropical cyclone in the West Philippine Sea (outside PAR) that affects the intensity and impact of Hanging Habagat or the southwest monsoon in the country.
Meanwhile, Pagasa said the southwest monsoon continues to affect the southern part of Luzon, as well as the Visayas area.
"Metro Manila, and the rest of Luzon and Visayas will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms," Pagasa said.
The skies of Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, it added.
Pagasa also said, "Moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest to south will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southwest to south with slight to moderate seas." (SFP/Sunnex)
