MALACANANG said Friday that the proposal for a 14th month pay of workers by Senator Vicente Sotto III needs further study.
While the proposal sounds good as this could benefit both workers from the government and the private sector, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, however, said that its possible consequences have to be determined also.
"There's a need to thoroughly discuss that and to see the possible unintended consequences. And we leave that to our legislators to do," she said.
She said that the proposal has to be clarified also with the stakeholders, particularly the employers, to determine "if their businesses can afford to give."
Valte said that just like in the 13th month pay, extensive consultations were conducted between the workers group and the employers.
She said the government does not want a scenario wherein many Filipinos would lose their job just because employers could not afford the 14th month pay of their workers. (SDR/Sunnex)
