CEBU CITY -- Hundreds of people have joined the anti-pork barrel rally organized by the Cebu Coalition Against the Pork Barrel System (CCATPRS) in this city.
The rally started with a march from Fuente Osmena Circle to Plaza Independencia, where a Eucharistic Mass will be held at 3 p.m. today.
The participants, carrying banners calling for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel of lawmakers, started to gather around 1 p.m. at Fuente Osmena. The walk started around 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Oliver Gimenez, of the CCATPRS, said he expects around 8,000 participants in today's interfaith rally, which has been endorsed by Cebu Archbishop Jose S. Palma.
Palma earlier invited the public to join the march to denounce the pork barrel system and end government corruption.
"Please join the prayer rally on September 29. We are criticizing a system that is out of tune...When you come please be open to the thought that, we are not only decrying a bad practice. We are also praying to be inspired in order to discern and study and learn and eventually recommend solutions that would respond to the questions often asked when the pork barrel will be scrapped," the Archbishop said earlier.
The CCATPRS is composed of more than 50 interfaith, academic, business and civil society organizations.
