THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday said that at least 58 persons, including two policemen, have been arrested for violation of the election gun ban since Saturday.
Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, spokesman for PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima, said the gun ban operations also resulted in the seizure of 46 firearms and assorted ammunition.
Mayor said 54 of the gun ban violators are civilians. The other suspects included two policemen, a government official and a security guard.
He said that apart from 46 firearms, the operations also resulted in the seizure of 19 bladed weapons, three grenades and three gun replicas. At least 477 assorted ammunition were also seized.
The PNP implemented the gun ban starting last Saturday to ensure peace and order in connection with the October 28 barangay elections. The effort is complemented by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Mayor said the PNP and other government agencies "continuously conduct checkpoints nationwide to sustain safety and security within the country this election period."
Mayor said Purisima "assures that the PNP will remain vigilant in its law enforcement and security operations to ensure safe and fair election." (VR/Sunnex)
