Santiago: Impeachment vs Aquino won't prosper-A A +A
Thursday, October 3, 2013
ANY bid to impeach President Benigno Aquino III over the controversial Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) is not likely to prosper, Senator Miriam Santiago said Thursday.
In a cable TV interview, Santiago cited not just the difficulty of proving Aquino intended to "misappropriate" funds in the DAP.
Besides, she said Aquino enjoys the support of many allies in both houses of Congress.
"I don't think he will qualify for impeachment,” she said, adding that "in reality, it is not going to work."
Also, she pointed out that if Aquino is impeached in the House of Representatives, members of the House may be "admitting" they may have been involved in the supposed bribery using the DAP.
If they impeach Aquino, she said they are "in effect admitting that at the very least, they are accomplices or accessories to a crime.”
But she maintained the disbursement of DAP funds to senators may still be considered bribery, and that the DAP is unconstitutional. Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said earlier that DAP allocations were given to senators after the impeachment of then Chief Justice Renato Corona.
Meanwhile, Santiago said Abad, who created the DAP should resign out of "delicadeza." (JK/Sunnex)
