Aquino names new Sandiganbayan chief-A A +A
Friday, October 4, 2013
(UPDATED) Malacanang confirmed Friday the appointment of Amparo Cabotaje-Tang as the new presiding justice of the Sandiganbayan.
President Benigno Aquino III made the appointment on October 1, 2013, said Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.
Tang, one of the youngest members of the anti-graft court, will replace Francisco Villaruz Jr., who retired last June.
Tang beat Court of Appeals Associate Justice Apolinario Bruselas, Local Government Undersecretary Rafael Santos, Sandiganbayan Justice Efren dela Cruz and Acting Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Gregory Ong, whose appointment to the Supreme Court in 2007 was withdrawn due to citizenship issues.
She served as Assistant Solicitor General prior to joining the judiciary last year.
Tang prepared the government's pleading before the Sandiganbayan to stop the plea bargain deal entered into by suspected plunderer retired Major General Carlos Garcia and the Office of the Ombudsman in February 2010.
Last July, the SC barred the Sandiganbayan from promulgating its decision on the assailed agreement after the Office of the Solicitor General appealed the anti-graft court’s ruling that junked the government's motion to intervene in the case.
Garcia was accused of amassing P303 million in unexplained wealth. (With SDR/Sunnex)
