WASHINGTON -- A man died from his injuries after he set himself on fire inside a mall in U.S. on Friday afternoon (Saturday Philippine time).
The man poured the contents of a red canister of gasoline on himself in the center portion of the National Mall on Friday afternoon. Joggers who were passing by took off their shirts and tried to help put out the flames.
Authorities said the man was conscious and breathing at the scene, but he was airlifted to MedStar Washington Hospital Center where he died on Friday night.
District of Columbia police spokesman Araz Alali said the injuries were so severe that authorities will have to use DNA and dental records to identify the man.
One witness, Katy Scheflen, said she did not hear the man say anything intelligible before he set himself on fire.
However, she noticed that another man with a tripod was standing nearby and had disappeared by the time the police had arrived.
"I can't say what the connection was between them or whether there was a connection," she added.
Meanwhile, the authorities are still investigating the man's possible motives.
The fire incident occurred near Washington Navy Yard where 13 people died, including a woman who was shot by a police officer, following a high-speed car chase on Thursday. (AP)
