PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III recently appointed Melchor Arthur Carandang as the number two person in the Office of the Ombudsman, which is tasked to evaluate and pursue cases against erring government officials.
Carandang bested graft investigator Roque Dator and lawyer Ferdinand Rafanan, planning director of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the position, which was vacated by Orlando Casimiro on August 23.
The appointment letter was received by the office of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on October 16.
Carandang began his stint in the anti-graft body in 1989 as planning officer before rising through the ranks. He was an Assistant Ombudsman until 2007, spanning the terms of Ombudsman Simeon Marcelo and Merceditas Gutierrez.
He also acted as legal consultant to the Ombudsman. Carandang holds a law degree from the University of Sto. Tomas. (Sunnex)
