AROUND 2,000 policemen will be deployed in several highly contested places in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) for Monday's barangay elections, a poll official said on Thursday.
Lawyer Rey Sumalipao, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) director for Armm, said these police officers will take care of the security and other safety concerns.
The Comelec monitors 300 barangays in the Armm placed under the classification "areas of immediate concern" wherein, 180 were located in the province of Lanao del Sur.
Meanwhile, Sumalipao also said that as several teachers declined to serve as Board of Election Tellers (BETs) in the region, the policemen may be trained as part of the Special Board of Election Tellers that will handle and facilitate the voting procedure and counting on Election Day itself.
Sumalipao also said that teachers in the region face several threats.
"Many of them fear for their safety while others don't want to be part of the process since some or most of their relatives were candidates too," Sumalipao said.
But he clarified that the Comelec en banc will still vote whether to allow the law enforcers to act as election tellers in Armm. (Sunnex)
