MANILA -- Aside from their new barangay officials, Davaoeños are set to decide on Monday whether they are in favor of the creation of the new province to be called Davao Occidental.
On Sunday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminded voters in Davao del Sur that they shall also be voting “yes” or “no” with respect to Republic Act 10360 or the “Act Creating the Province of Davao Occidental” passed by Congress last July 23.
“Voters in Davao del Sur shall use a different ballot in the October 28 Barangay Elections as it would also include voting for the plebiscite,” said the Comelec in a statement.
The decision if the municipalities of Sta. Maria, Malita, Don Marcelino, Jose Abad Santos, and Sarangani shall form the province of Davao Occidental shall be in the hands of the estimated 523,862 registered voters from Davao del Sur.
Aside from the plebiscite in Davao del Sur, the poll body is also reminding aspiring candidates in the quake-stricken Bohol to file their Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) if they have yet to do so.
“The Comelec resolves to set additional dates for the filing of COCs exclusively in the Province of Bohol on October 28 and 29 to compensate for the days where the operation of the local Comelec offices was disrupted by the earthquake,” said Comelec Resolution 9804.
As of October 14, at least 656 candidates for barangay chairperson filed their COcs aside from the 4,676 that are looking to be barangay kagawads in the 1,109 barangays in all of Bohol.
To note, the Comelec had already postponed the conduct of the Barangay elections in the whole province of Bohol as well as in Zamboanga City.
Subsequently, the poll body set the special elections in these areas on November 25 in order to provide ample time for relief and rehabilitation. (HDT/Sunnex)
