Flying voter noted in Calbayog City-A A +A
Tuesday, October 29, 2013
A VOTER in Calbayog City was dismayed after learning that someone used her name in voting on Monday’s barangay polls.
Irene Ligan Pastranas, 21, said she suspected it could be her neighbor or someone who knew her really well.
Patranas was registered at Precinct 130A in Barangay Carmen but currently lives in Barangay Matobato. She is also working in Catbalogan City.
She said she came to the precinct around 2 p.m. Monday, but found out that someone signed for her in the registration list. An election rule mandates that only one ballot is allowed per voter.
“It never happened to me that I wasn’t able to vote during the mid-term election this May,” she added.
Precinct chair Myrna Isidro said the Barangay Election Tellers (BETs), however, said they never knew an anomaly was happening, adding they did not doubt it was Irene who voted since necessary documents were presented.
When asked about the liability of the BETs, City Election Officer lawyer Fidel Amacna said they only acted in good faith.
The watchers had the responsibility to identify the voters and if there’s lapses, it’s there’s, Amacna said.
Amacna added that Pastranas can file a complaint at the BET during the polls, adding that this is not only happening in Carmen, but in other precincts as well.
As of this posting, the Commission on Elections is still waiting for additional information from the monitoring group. (Gerwin Babon/Sunnex)
