Napoles’ lawyer resigns as lead counsel-A A +A
Wednesday, October 30, 2013
MANILA (Updated)-- Citing differences in strategy, lawyer Lorna Kapunan has withdrawn as counsel for businesswoman Janet Napoles in her serious illegal detention case filed by pork barrel scam whistleblower Benhur Luy.
Reports said Napoles’ family did not object to her decision to end the services of Kapunan Garcia and Castillo law offices in a meeting on Tuesday night.
Kapunan skipped the hearing on Wednesday at the Makati Regional Trial Court branch 150 and was expected to visit Napoles in Fort Sto. Domingo in Sta. Rosa, Laguna before formalizing her motion to withdraw as counsel.
Separately, Kapunan said she has been receiving death threats when the name of the businesswoman was implicated in the scam.
Kapunan added that there is a politician who made serious threats for her to remain silent in the pork barrel scam. She did not identify the politician.
"Really, we were intending to do that precisely, because of the real threats on my life," Kapunan said.
In a chance interview, Senator Sergio Osmeña III said Napoles’ defense might weaken because of the development.
“Hindi maganda 'yun, kapag-inabandon ka ng abogado mo. That means you’re not united in the strategy to be carried out,” he said.
Taking Napoles’ place is lawyer Freddie Villamor, who has yet to reply to queries as of this posting Wednesday.
The court is still hearing Napoles’ petition for bail. Napoles is set to present her rebuttal evidence after the cross examination on Luy. (Virgil Lopez/PNA/Sunnex)
