MANILA -- Residents of a village in Tagbilaran City, Bohol were advised to evacuate the area due to the threat of a landslide from a new sinkhole.
The sinkhole had formed following a magnitude 7.2 quake last Oct. 15, the Philippine Information Agency's (PIA) Bohol office said Wednesday.
A sinkhole is a depression wherein the type of rocks below the surface of the land naturally dissolves to groundwater underneath. Many areas in Bohol are made up of limestones which are susceptible to sinkholes, especially when earthquakes occur.
Quoting the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the PIA said the threat of a landslide is high due to the new sinkhole.
It said the sinkhole in Poblacion 1 is one of 50 sinkholes in Tagbilaran City that emerged after the quake. (JK/Sunnex)
