3 government lawyers to assist Napoles in Senate hearing-A A +A
Tuesday, November 5, 2013
THE Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) has named three lawyers who will assist businesswoman Janet Napoles in her appearance before the Senate Blue Ribbon committee hearing on the alleged pork barrel scam on Thursday.
They are lawyers Marlon Buan, Howard Areza and Analisa Soriano, said PAO Chief Persida Acosta on Tuesday.
Acosta’s action came after the committee assured Napoles that she will be provided with lawyers to “afford protection of her constitutional rights.”
She said the legal assistance is in line with Section 3 of Republic Act 9406 or the law strengthening the PAO.
The provision states that the PAO "may be called upon by proper government authorities to render such service to other persons, subject to existing laws, rules and regulations."
Ironically, it was Acosta who worked for the release of Napoles' maid Dominga Cadelina from prison over qualified theft charges on October 4.
Napoles would have wanted to postpone the hearing to give her time to look for a replacement to Lorna Kapunan, who recently quit as her legal counsel in the serious illegal detention case. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
