THE House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal (HRET) has authorized the collection of the ballots involved in the poll protest of actor Aga Muhlach against his opponent Wimpy Fuentebella who defeated him in the congressional elections in the fourth district of Camarines Sur last May.
Muhlach's chief legal counsel Romulo Macalintal said in a press conference in Intramuros that a notice resolution was released by the House secretary general last Monday, authorizing the chairperson of the electoral tribunal to "issue an order of collection of ballot boxes containing the ballots and their keys, Voters' Registration Records/Book of Voters, Election Day Computerized Voters' List with voting records used in the May 13 elections and other election documents and paraphernalia involved in this case."
The actor-turned politician protested the results the elections in 255 clustered precincts in the said province, including those from the towns of Caramoan, Garchitonera, Lagonoy, Presentacion, Sagnay, Siruna and Tinambac due to several reported incidents of vote-buying, ballot tampering or errors in scanning of ballots by the PCOS machines, use of corrupted flash cards and fraudulent transmission of election results.
Muhlach, a candidate of ruling Liberal Party, was defeated by Fuentebella by a slim margin of 2,205 votes.
Macalintal said his client is "glad and gratified" by the electoral tribunal ruling and he is hoping for the early resolution of his election protest.
"Aga expresses is confidence that the true results of the election upon recount of the ballots will reveal that he was the lawful winner in the last May 13 election," Macalintal said. (Sunnex)
