Aquino: Roxas not being groomed to be next president-A A +A
Tuesday, December 3, 2013
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III denied Tuesday that Secretary Manuel Roxas II of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is now being groomed to be his successor.
Aquino said in the Bulong Pulungan forum that his party, the Liberal Party, has not decided who would be endorsed as its presidential candidate in the 2016 elections.
"Is he being groomed? Our party has not decided on that. We have not discussed it. We are focused on solving the problems of today," he said.
The President explained that all his Cabinet officials, including Roxas, are his alter egos who perform their functions on his behalf.
"Would the Secretary of the Interior, given all of the calamities that have befallen us—man-made and natural—be of service if he were absent from the scenes? So that is just but the function of the job," he said.
Roxas has been very visible especially in areas struck by calamities, thus, raising speculations that he was being groomed to be the next president.
The DILG chief ran for vice president in 2010 polls but lost to Vice President Jejomar Binay who is also eyeing the presidency in 2016. (SDR/Sunnex)
