Monday, December 9, 2013
VICE President Jejomar Binay will leave Monday night for South Africa to attend the state funeral for the late global democracy icon Nelson Mandela and extend the Philippines' condolences to his family.
"The government and the people of the Philippines stand with them at this hour of their great loss," said Binay, who will bring the condolence letter of President Benigno Aquino III.
The Vice President will leave at 7:55 p.m. via Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX902.
Earlier, Binay praised Mandela for his "unconquerable spirit and the healing power of forgiveness" despite his incarceration for 27 years until 1990 for fighting the apartheid or racial discrimination by white rulers in South Africa.
He said the former South African president inspires people to "strive for a world where freedom, equality, tolerance and understanding reign."
Mandela, who died at age 95 on December 5, will be buried next Sunday in Qunu, his hometown some 550 miles from Johannesburg.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
