DOJ to probe Enrile ‘sins’-A A +A
Monday, December 9, 2013
JUSTICE Secretary Leila de Lima will ask Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago to give a detailed picture of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile’s alleged involvement in smuggling, illegal gambling and illegal logging activities in his home province of Cagayan.
Enrile is the author of the law creating the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (Ceza), where the illicit activities allegedly took place.
"I'm thinking of getting more particulars from Senator Santiago to guide us so that we would know exactly the direction of our probe. These are allegations and we would want to know the basis for the requested investigation," de Lima said in a television interview Monday.
Santiago formally asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate Enrile last Thursday, a day after she made a litany of sins to the public allegedly committed by her political nemesis and wedding godfather.
The lady senator called Enrile the "mastermind of plunder" and "hypersexualized serial womanizer," among others while Enrile earlier criticized Santiago's mettle as a lawyer and her mental state.
Senators Sergio Osmeña III and Vicente Sotto III have since planned to initiate a move to delete from the Senate record the privilege speeches of Enrile and Santiago for containing personal attacks.
Sotto said the chamber should deal with national issues and not personal fights. (Sunnex)
