SWU enters PCCL finals-A A +A

CEBUANOS were given another crack at a national title as the Southwestern University (SWU) will face De La Salle University (DLSU) next week in the best-of-three finals series of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL).
Lefty guard Monbert Arong dropped 23 points on Thursday for SWU, which ousted two-time winner Far Eastern University (FEU), 86-71, in the round-robin Final Four. The last Cebuano team to reach the finals was the Cobras’ bitter rival University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, who bowed to Ateneo de Manila University in 2007.
In an interview, Cobras coach Yayoy Alcoseba said they are proud to represent Visayas and Mindanao in the tournament dominated by Manila-based teams. The Cebuanos were supposed to return home on Friday morning had they lost the match against the Tamaraws.
But the Cobras obviously did not want to board the plane yet as they recovered from a sluggish start to lead by as much as 19 points.
Landry Sanjo tallied 19 points and 15 rebounds while former La Salle player Mark Tallo had an all-around game with 16 points, eight boards, seven assists, and two steals.
La Salle, which ruled the UAAP last October, bested NCAA champion San Beda, 64-60, for the other finals slot.
The championship series begins on Monday (December 16) at the Arena in San Juan City. (Sunnex)
