Monday, December 16, 2013
SOUTHWESTERN University (SWU) is on the verge of losing its bid to become the first non-Manila team to win the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) title after losing to De La Salle University (DLSU), 64-54, in Game 1 of the best-of-three finals on Monday.
The Cobras never had the chance to equalize, trailing by as much as 22 points at the end of the third quarter. They mounted a comeback in the middle of the fourth but only managed to cut the deficit to nine, 61-52, courtesy of Landry Sanjo.
Thomas Torres then completed a three-point play to hike the lead to 12 with 1:18 remaining and make the game out of reach.
"In the first three quarters, we were tentative on offense, not aggressive on defense. We were competing against each other," said Cobras mentor Yayoy Alcoseba in a chance interview.
Alcoseba said they have to share the ball on Game 2 on Tuesday, also at the Arena in San Juan City. Game 3 is on Thursday.
"We don't want to go home yet," he said.
Sanjo paced the Cobras with 16 points and six rebounds while Monbert Arong and Daryl Golororan combined for 18 points while Mark Tallo was limited to six.
Jeron Teng topped all scorers with 18 markers. (Sunnex)
