Arroyo allowed to spend holidays with family at VMMC-A A +A

MANILA -- Former President and Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Thursday received an early Christmas gift from the Sandiganbayan after the anti-graft court allowed her to spend the holidays with her family while in hospital detention.
The court said Arroyo's family will be allowed to spend Christmas and New Year's Eve on December 24 and December 31 in her suite at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City.
Last December 13, Arroyo, through her lawyer, appealed before the Sandiganbayan to relax the strict visiting hours implemented by the Philippine National Police since December 9.
“With the denial by the PSPG (Police Security and Protection Group) of accused GMA’s appeal... (She) is left with no other plain, speedy and adequate remedy to make come true her fervent wish that she, like all members of the closely-knit Filipino families, be able to spend quality time with members of her family... except recourse to this Honorable Court,” the petition said.
The former President said even her husband, lawyer Jose Miguel Arroyo, was barred from staying overnight at her hospital suite and was told to leave the VMMC compound before 9:30 p.m.
Arroyo is detained at the VMMC over the alleged misuse of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office funds worth P366 million. (Sunnex)
