MANILA - The Department of Health (DOH) recorded 161 cases of fireworks-related injuries in three major hospitals during the final hours of 2013 and the first ones of 2014.

According to the DOH–National Epidemiology Center’s Quick Count, 161 firecracker-related injuries were reported from 6 p.m. of December 31 to 6 a.m. of January 1.

The Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRMMC) and Tondo Medical Center (TMC) recorded 71 and 31 cases, respectively, and the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) in Quezon City recorded 59 patients.

The DOH earlier said it is gearing up for busy hospital operations in the 12-hour period bridging the old and the new year.

“The DOH braces for 50-80 fireworks-related injuries every hour in the 12-hour period from 6 p.m., December 31, to 6 a.m., January 1,” said DOH spokesman Dr. Eric Tayag.

According to the hourly quick count bulletin, there were only 71 cases of injuries as of 12 midnight of December 31; 39 came from the JRMMC, while 20 were brought to the EAMC, and the remaining 12 were treated at the TMC.

But the injured victims began piling up as 90 were reported after midnight until the morning of January 1. JRMMC still attended to most injuries with 32; the EAMC with 39; while the TMC treated 19 injuries.

In last year’s DOH quick count, there was a total of 214 firecracker-related injuries reported during the similar period, sourced from seven hospitals. (HDT/Sunnex)
