CEBU CITY -- Thousands of people joined the annual penitential procession known as the “Walk with Jesus” from Fuente Osmeña to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in this city Thursday dawn.

The walk started around 4 a.m. despite the rains. Police said an estimate of 45,000 people joined the procession, which also marks the opening salvo of the Sinulog 2014 celebration.

In his homily during the Mass held after the procession, Fr. Jonas Mejares lauded the Cebuanos' strong faith despite the series of calamities that happened in the country last year.

Cebu was hit in October 2013 by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake, although its epicenter was located in Bohol province. In November, Typhoon Yolanda damaged several properties and claimed at least two lives in northern Cebu.

With the number of people expected to join the procession and attend the Mass, large screens were installed within the vicinity of the Sto. Niño church for devotees who could not enter the Basilica.

After the Mass, the Hermano and Hermana Mayor for the fiesta celebration this year were installed. They were Jay Roble and his wife Elvina.

The Sto. Niño church has scheduled a series of Masses in celebration of Fiesta Señor 2014 daily. View the schedule at the Basilica del Sto. Nino website. For the Sinulog 2014 activities, click here. (JAC/LMY/Sunnex)
