KIDAPAWAN — At least 24 people, including government personnel, were wounded in a grenade explosion in a school campus in the southern Philippines, police said Monday.

Police Inspector Rolly Oranza said firemen, police and government disaster-response personnel were battling a fire in a bunkhouse of security guards inside the state-run Cotabato Foundation College of Science and Technology in Arakan town late Sunday when somebody lobbed a grenade near a firetruck. The attacker escaped.

Oranza said that a policeman, government firefighters, students and school guards were among those wounded by shrapnel and flying debris. They were taken to nearby hospitals.

He said investigators have not identified the attacker who escaped after the explosion.

Authorities are now investigating if the fire was deliberately started to lure authorities before the blast. (AP)
