Binay appeals for humane treatment of Filipinos in Malaysia-A A +A

VICE President Jejomar Binay asked Malaysian authorities on Friday to ensure humane treatment of Filipino workers amid its crackdown on illegal immigrants.
“Sana po naman ay hindi manakit. Kung may kasalanan man ay parusahan pero 'wag saktan. Lalo na 'yung mga legal, legitimate ang trabaho doon. Kasi ina-angal natin ay ang balita po natin kahit 'yung mga legitimate at documented ay hinuhuli at sinasaktan pa. Hindi yata tama 'yun,” said Binay, Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Workers' (OFW) Concerns.
He said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is already validating reports that even Filipino workers with proper documents are being rounded up in Sabah and taken to detention centers where they are forced to admit that they were illegal workers.
The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur had earlier reminded Filipinos in Malaysia to complete their immigration documentation and always carry identification documents. Those who are found without valid documents will be deported within seven days.
The DFA said only a few Filipinos have asked the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur for help in repatriation. There are around 700,000 Filipino workers in Malaysia. (Sunnex)
