MANILA -- Lawyer Lorna Kapunan declined to disclose the identity of the Supreme Court (SC) justice who allegedly accepted bribes for favorable decisions, saying her statements in a television interview last year were pure “hearsay.”

"This Honorable Court will please note… that no personal accusations were made and where information on corruption and bribe money was based on hearsay and/or general knowledge within the legal circles," she told the Court in a 10-page compliance (document) made public on Monday.

Kapunan said she has no intention to put the Court in a bad light for telling ABS-CBN morning show “Umagang Kay Ganda” last November 21 that an SC justice can be bought for a favorable ruling while a temporary restraining order (TRO) from the Court of Appeals (CA) can be secured for as much as P5 million.

The High Court then gave Kapunan, former lawyer of alleged pork barrel scam queen Janet Napoles, until December 12 to explain the reason behind those claims.

Earlier, Kapunan told Sun.Star that her television interview was made with “all good intentions” to help the SC in cleansing the judiciary.

She also asked those who have faith in the country’s justice system to heed the call of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to come forward and name the “hoodlums in robes” or judges and justices involved in corrupt practices.

“Our people are clamoring for cleansing of not only Congress but the other co-equal branches of government, the Executive and the Judiciary. No reform will be complete if the judiciary is spared from this cleansing process,” said Kapunan.

A three-man committee headed by Associate Justice Marvic Leonen is currently investigating alleged reports of corruption and influence peddling in the judiciary by a certain “Ma’am Arlene.”

It is expected to submit initial findings to the SC en banc by April. (Sunnex)
