MANILA -- The Senate filed perjury charges before the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday against businessman Davidson Bangayan for lying under oath about his real identity before a legislative inquiry on rice smuggling.

The complaint, which stemmed from Bangayan’s insistence that he is not smuggling king David Tan, was filed by Horace Cruda, secretary of the committee on agriculture and food that is looking into the issue.

Cruda said 11 senators led by committee chairperson Senator Cynthia Villar signed the complaint for violation of Article 183 of the Revised Penal Code.

Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile earlier chided Bangayan in a hearing for not telling the truth as he showed a copy of the businessman's libel complaint against six people including Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) chairman Jesus Arranza.

Bangayan claimed he is Tan in the affidavit he executed in 2005. However, Bangayan said that he signed the complaint as "Davidson Bangayan,” blaming his lawyer for not correcting the information.

He was arrested on Monday for electricity pilferage case pending before a Caloocan City court but was later released by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after he posted P40,000 bail.

The Senate is also preparing a request for the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to cancel Bangayan’s passport. (Sunnex)
