THE Aquino government is preparing surprise inspections of public transport firms' facilities to ensure road, air, and seaworthiness, a Palace official said Sunday.

The surprise inspections will be conducted following the tragic bus accident that killed at least 14 people, including comedian Tado (Arvin Jimenez in real life), in Mountain Province last Friday.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said such inspections would be necessary as Filipinos were expected to start flocking to the provinces in time for the school break and Holy Week.

"'Yung direktiba po dito sa ligtas na transportasyon, tiyak na kasama rin po yung sa karagatan, at pati na sa himpapawid...Patuloy na tinututukan ng pamahalaan ang pagiging ligtas ng lahat ng uri ng sasakyang pampubliko," he said on state-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) had suspended the GV Florida Bus Transport, operator of the bus in Friday's tragedy.

In the meantime, Coloma said the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) will ensure the occupational safety and health of the bus drivers and conductors.

"Kinakailangan po silang mag-comply diyan sa mga panuntunan na 'yan, at kung matuklasan na mayroong paglabag, ay may karampatang penalty an isinasagawa para sa kanila-laban sa kanila," he said.

Coloma also maintained that LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez has President Benigno Aquino III's trust and confidence. (SDR/Sunnex)
