ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Government forces thwarted plans of the New People’s Army (NPA) to set off landmines when they clashed with the rebels while conducting security patrol in a remote village in Compostela Valley province.

The clash resulted in the injury of a soldier and three NPA rebels, officials said.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer Captain Alberto Caber said the clash broke out around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sitio Sapdan in the village of Casoon, Mongkayo, Compostela Valley.

Caber said the clash ensued when the troops chanced upon the rebels while checking on their reported presence in Casoon village.

Caber did not identify the wounded soldier, but said he belongs to the Army’s 25th Infantry Battalion.

The three wounded NPA rebels were seen by civilians being dragged by their retreating comrades, Caber said.

He said the troops recovered two improvised bombs fashioned out as landmines with 200 meters detonating cord, two M-14 rifles, one M-16 Armalite rifle, medical paraphernalia, personal belongings and subversive documents of high intelligence value.

Eastmincom commander Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III commended the soldiers for the continuous effort in protecting the communities and the recovery of the NPA firearms and explosives. (Sunnex)
