MANILA (Updated) -- Religious group Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) broke the world record for the largest charity walk held in one site, after 175,509 people turned up for the "Worldwide Walk" in the streets of Manila to raise funds for Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) victims on Saturday.

Kirsty Bennet, adjudicator from the Guinness Book of World Records, said the 1.6-kilometer walk, which was primarily staged to raise funds for Yolanda survivors, surpassed the record of Singapore's "The New Paper Big Walk," which had 77,500 participants in 2000.

Bennet made the official announcement before 7 p.m. of Saturday.

The walk for a cause was staged in 85 sites in the Philippines and 55 more sites across the globe with 34 in the USA; six in Europe; 10 in Australia and New Zealand; and five in Asia.

In Metro Manila, the walk started at the grounds of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) along Roxas Boulevard all the way to the Rizal Park.

INC spokesperson Bro. Edwil Zabala said that the global charity walk was expected to generate funds for the survivors of the catastrophic storm that hit the country last November.

"We are not sure if we could do that because the requirement is 24 hours continuously. It is not just a question of numbers because if a question of numbers, dito pa lang sa Manila tapos na usapan for the two venues. But the second venue, the requirement is someone should be walking," Zabala said.

In its Twitter account, the INC Media organization posted photos of its members who also took to the streets in New York City, Paris, London and other parts of the world.

The activity on Saturday was just one of the events of the INC for its Centennial celebration on July 27. (FP/Sunnex)
