Edsa People Power celebration to be held in Malacañang-A A +A
Sunday, February 16, 2014
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III will lead the commemoration of the 1986 Edsa People Power on February 25 inside Malacañang grounds, a Palace official said Sunday.
Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said this was the decision made by the Edsa People Power Commission under Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. to avoid inconvenience to motorists and commuters.
Past celebrations were held at the Edsa People Power Monument in Quezon City, the site of the four-day peaceful uprising against the regime of then President Ferdinand Marcos.
Some lanes of Edsa had to be closed for the program, which includes the flag-raising and traditional "salubungan" between the people and soldiers who turned their backs on the dictator.
But Coloma said these will be done in the Palace lawn this time.
There will also be a "pulong-bayan" (town hall meeting) between the President and representatives of various sectors to commemorate the ascension of his late mother, Corazon Aquino, to the presidency.
Asked if critics of the administration would be invited in the pulong-bayan, Coloma said the list of invitees will be announced in the coming days.
"Ang nais po natin dito ay mapakinggan ‘yung saloobin ng iba’t ibang sektor ng ating lipunan. Wala pa pong listahan ng mga indibidwal o organisasyon at ipapaalam po natin ‘yan sa mga darating na araw," he said.
This year's anniversary will have the theme “Kapit-bisig para sa Pagbangon.”
Coloma said the administration is shifting the focus of Edsa 1 celebrations from those who took part in the revolt to modern-day Filipinos working together to fight poverty. (SDR/Sunnex)
