Cebu celebrates 28th Edsa Day

CEBU (Updated, 5:00 p.m.)-- In celebration of the 28th anniversary of Edsa, President Benigno Aquino III visited the typhoon-stricken island of Bantayan and promised funds for its reconstruction.

The President, who is in Bantayan as of this posting, promised to have its public market fixed and set aside P191 million for the reconstruction of damaged school buildings.


"Let's start working to make Bantayan a top tourism destination," Aquino told Bantayanons Tuesday.

Thousands of Cebuanos joined the 28th anniversary celebration of the Edsa People Power Revolution at the Provincial Capitol grounds on Tuesday morning.

The ceremony was spearheaded by the President, who arrived in Cebu with his cabinet secretaries.


In his speech, Aquino said Cebu played an important role in restoring Philippine freedom. The province also served as a home of his mother, late President Corazon "Cory" Aquino, during chaotic times in Manila.

The President added that Cebu should also be recognized for serving as the command center for relief operations in the aftermath of the series of calamities that hit the Visayas last year.

Edsa revolution was annualy celebrated every 25th of February to commemorate the people power rally in 1983, when Filipinos fought for democracy against the dictotarship of former President Ferdinand Marcos.

Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III also thanked the National Government for visiting Cebu.


He urged fellow Cebuanos to unite, in spite of the challenges the province is facing, including the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

The crowd cheered as actor Dingdong Dantes and Senator Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV led the "Salubungan" reenactment, where civilians, military groups, volunteers, and religious sector meet and unite as one Filipino people.

Edsa People Power Commission comissioner Ogie Alcasid also graced the ceremony and rendered the song "Ang Pilipinas ay Babangon."


The participants also sang "Bayan ko" of Freddie Aguilar and "Magkaisa" of Titto Sotto.

Aquino also visited Bantayan Island on Tuesday afternoon to check the status of the rehabilitation program in the villages affected by Yolanda.

The president promised to have Bantayan's public market fixed, sets aside P191M for schools. 2 other LGUs in island also assured of aid.
