MANILA -- An attack of a military installation in Maguindanao on Friday killed three members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and injured three government troops.
Colonel Dickson Hermoso, the Army's 6th Infantry Division spokesman, said the BIFF men fired mortar rounds at the base of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion in Kabingi village in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town around 11:45 p.m.
Hermoso said sporadic fighting lasted up to around 1 a.m. Saturday when the undetermined number of attackers withdrew.
"They used mortars but they were far from the camp...They were not able to go near the camp," he said, adding though that the range of 60mm weapons the BIFF used is three kilometers.
"What they did was harassment by indirect firing," added Hermoso.
Last month, government troops launched law enforcement operations against the group in Maguindanao, leaving 52 BIFF men dead and several BIFF camps captured.
"They are licking their wounds, that's why they want to get even. Many of them died in the previous fighting," he said of the law enforcement campaign. (VR/Sunnex)
