DAVAO (Updated 3:06 p.m.) -- A soldier was killed while four others, one of them an officer, were wounded during an encounter with some 60 New People's Army (NPA) fighters in Sitio Tagsing, Barangay Panoraon, Maco town, Compostela Valley Wednesday morning.
Captain Ernest Carolina, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the encounter happened around 9 a.m. after two combat groups from the 71st Infantry Battalion, who were conducting patrols in the area, spotted the heavily-armed rebels.
A heavy firefight erupted between the two forces, at which the rebels detonated a landmine.
Carolina said the NPA sustained heavy casualties before making their retreat.
He added that the wounded troopers are now in stable condition at the Camp Panacan Station Hospital in Davao City, while pursuit operations are being conducted against the rebel remnants.
Security alert in Northern Mindanao has been heightened following an attack at a police station in Matanao town in Davao del Sur by New People’s Army fighters, where fatalities reached to 12 and wounded nine others at dawn on Monday.
Of the 12 killed, seven were soldiers, three were policemen, and two were rebels.
Superintendent Michael Pareja, Police Regional Office spokesperson, said checkpoints were installed in all entrances and exits to prevent lawless persons or groups from carrying assaults in the region.
For the last two years, the NPAs have been raiding police and military stations in the region. The latest happened in Kibawe town early this year where a police died. (PNA/Sunnex)
