Osmeña: Aquino risks losing endorsement power for 2016-A A +A
Thursday, March 13, 2014
SENATOR Sergio Osmeña III said President Benigno Aquino III could lose his endorsement power in the 2016 national elections if he continues to be the "hardheaded" leader that he is.
"He's going to lose much of his endorsement value in 2016. You know, you have to ascribe or assign a certain value to the endorsement by a sitting president even if he is the outgoing president," Osmeña said in a press briefing Thursday.
"I want him to do well. I want him to do better but sometimes, he's so hard-headed. What can we do?" he added.
He clarified however that he does not regret supporting the President in the 2010 elections. He acted as Aquino's campaign manager in the race.
Aquino, who is chairman of the Liberal Party (LP), will reportedly endorse Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II as standard bearer of the ruling party in the 2016 polls.
The Cebuano senator, on the other hand, criticized the President for being an "awful manager."
He cited Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla who has kept his Cabinet post despite the power woes of the country.
"I've been observing him. I don't like what I see, not because he's not intelligent, but his mind is elsewhere," Osmeña said.
The group People Opposed to Unwarranted Electricity Rates (Power) earlier called for Petilla's resignation for failing to address the power crisis in Mindanao.
"Maybe it's time Energy Secretary Jericho Petilla look for another job, probably as undersecretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development where he can better tend to his constituents in disaster-struck Leyte," the group said. (Sunnex)
