COTABATO CITY -- Pope Francis named Saturday Kidapawan Bishop Romulo dela Cruz as the new archbishop of Zamboanga, Cardinal Orlando Quevedo said.
Quevedo made the announcement to priests in the archdiocese of Cotabato and diocese of Kidapawan on Saturday night after he was informed by Papal Nuncio archbishop Giuseppe Pinto about Pope Francis' announcement in the Vatican.
Dela Cruz of the Diocesan Clergy of Cotabato (DCC) has been the bishop of Kidapawan since June 2008 after Pope Benedict named him as head of Kidapawan diocese, replacing then Bishop Romulo Valles who was also named bishop of Zamboanga archdiocese.
Quevedo, however, added that there is no appointment about the replacement of Dela Cruz as bishop of Kidapawan.
The new Zamboanga archbishop was born on June 24, 1947 in Balasan, Iloilo. He was ordained priest on December 8, 1972 in Kidapawan City and became bishop on March 16, 1988.
Before Dela Cruz was named bishop of Kidapawan, he served as the bishop of Antique.
Dela Cruz also served as a parish priest in various parishes in the archdiocese of Cotabato and as rector of the Notre Dame Archdiocesan Seminary in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.
He further studied in Saint Francis Xavier Major Seminary in Davao, and at the Institute on Religious Formation in Saint Louis, Missouri in the US. (PNA)
