MANILA -- The low pressure area (LPA) over the Pacific Ocean entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Wednesday morning, bringing light to moderate rains over Visayas and Mindanao, the state weather bureau said Wednesday.

In an interview, Alvin Pura, of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said the LPA was spotted some 845 km east of Mindanao.

Pura said that based on their models, the LPA has a chance of becoming a tropical depression.

"In case it intensifies into a tropical depression, he said it will be named "Caloy," the third cyclone to affect the country this year," he added.

The weather forecaster said Eastern and Central Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and isolated thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the rest of the country including Metro Manila, he noted will continue to have sunny to partly cloudy skies with possible isolated light rains in the afternoon or evening.

Pagasa said moderate to strong winds from the east to northeast will prevail over Luzon.

It added that the coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," Pagasa warned. (PNA)
