SINGAPORE President Tony Tan Keng Yam will be in the Philippines from April 2 to 5 upon the invitation of President Benigno Aquino III.

“President Tan will meet with President Aquino to discuss matters of mutual concern, including cooperative activities in defense, trade and investment, and the Filipino community in Singapore, among others,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

Tan is also slated to meet with the Philippine-Singapore Business Council and hand over donations of the people of Singapore to the partners of the Singapore Red Cross involved in the post-Typhoon Yolanda rehabilitation projects.

The Singaporean chief executive will go to Basey, Western Samar to present medical supplies to the Basey District Hospital as part of the joint rehabilitation project of the Singapore Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Tan will arrive in the country on Wednesday with his wife, Mary Tan.

Also part of his delegation are Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Grace Fu, who is also the second minister for the Environment and Water Resources, as well as for Foreign Affairs; Senior Parliamentary Secretary Hawazi Daipi, who is also from the Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Manpower; and Members of Parliament Lam Pin Min and Vikram Nair.

Singapore is the Philippines’ fourth largest trade partner in 2013, with a total trade amounting to $9.27 billion. It is also the sixth largest source of visitors to the Philippines with 175,304 tourist arrivals in 2013.

An estimated 180,000 Filipino nationals are also presently living and working in Singapore, where Aquino had a three-day state visit in March 2011. (HDT/Sunnex)
