MANILA -- Sixteen prisoners escaped from Calbayog City Jail in Samar province on Wednesday morning, a police official said.

Eastern Visayas Regional Police Office Director Henry Losanes identified the escapees as Romeo Coligado Jr., Crisanto Delos Reyes, Romeo Penote, Dindo Calagos, Ian Pante, Efren Pante, Jeffrey Dealagdon, Romeo Carpio, Edwin Abria, Melvin Juanerio, Dante Galileo, Rogelio Cuanico, Freddie Cagomoc, Roberto Pintuan, Joey Agas and a certain Malix.

The group escaped while they were conducting a bible study inside the detention center in Barangay Gadgaran.

One of the detainees took advantage of the activity and snatched the gun of one of the jail guards on duty and used the guard as a shield while escaping, Losanes said in a phone interview.

Police authorities are now working with the military counterpart and the fugitives' family for the arrest of the escapees.

(Sunnex)
