THE Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is ordering the recall of a batch of Lily's Peanut Butter (170 grams) after it was found to contain excessive amount of Aflatoxin, which is a by-product of molds.

According to FDA Advisory 2014-024, the agency ordered the recall of the product manufactured by Newborn Food Products Inc. that is under Lot No. A1 10:26 with an expiry date of May 23, 2014.

"The recall involves only the specified product under the mentioned lot number and no other Lily’s peanut butter variants and sizes are affected by the recall," said the FDA.

Aflatoxin B1, according to the FDA, is most commonly found in food products and is also the most toxic and carcinogenic, which increases the risk of developing cancer cells.

Also, it had said that Aflatoxin binds proteins, vitamins and minerals so that the body cannot absorb the nutrients.

"If ingested for a prolonged period in large doses, the poison can also inhibit the immune system," added the agency in FDA Advisory 2014-008.

The health agency said the manufacturer is being ordered to immediately recall the above-mentioned affected products.

Similarly, retail outlets selling the specific product are being ordered to discontinue offering the affected products to consumers, said the FDA.

Earlier in the month, the FDA also recalled one batch of Nagaraya Cracker Nut Original Butter Flavor (160 grams) after it was also found to contain unacceptable level for Aflatoxin.

"Consumers are assured that the FDA conducts continuous monitoring and market surveillance of all peanut-based food products for the purpose of ensuring protection of public health," said the FDA. (HDT/Sunnex)
