MANILA - United States Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg reiterated Wednesday America's commitment to help the Philippines in time of threats or disasters.

The US envoy made the remarks during the 72nd anniversary of the Day of Valor held in Mt. Samat, Pilar, Bataan, which was also attended by President Benigno Aquino III and Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Toshinao Urabe.

"As treaty allies, when the Philippines faces threats or natural disasters, so do we," he said in a speech.

Goldberg's statement came as the Philippines is embroiled in a territorial row with China.

As what happened during World War II when the Philippines and US were already allies, the US envoy said America "will continue to work together, shoulder-to-shoulder to improve each other's militaries and our nations as a whole."

He recalled that in the aftermath of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) that struck the country in November last year, American and Filipino soldiers and civilians work together.

"We are prepared to react and respond to any disaster," Goldberg added.

Urabe, for his part, again apologized for the atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers during the war.

He said Japan, the Philippines and the US are now strategic partners, sharing common values.

"Japan will continue to contribute proactively to the peace, stability, and prosperity not only for this region, but also for the international community," he said.

He also expressed Japan's commitment to continue its contribution in the peace effort in Mindanao. (SDR/Sunnex)
