CIVIL Defense Administrator Eduardo del Rosario offered to resign, more than a year after his appointment as executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), an official said Tuesday.

NDRRMC spokesperson Major Reynaldo Balido said del Rosario tendered his irrevocable resignation to Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin last April 24 citing the deterioration of his health as the main reason.

Balido said the NDRRMC executive director cannot easily vacate his position as "President Benigno Aquino III still has to approve his resignation."

Del Rosario was appointed by Aquino after former NDRRMC head Benito Ramos resigned in February 2013.

"He (del Rosario) has to properly turn over and orient the next executive director of his duties and responsibilities," Balido said.

As NDRRMC executive director, del Rosario was tasked to oversee the disaster management system of the whole country. Under his term, several man-made and natural disasters have occurred in the country, such as, the Zamboanga City siege, the Bohol earthquake last October and Typhoon Yolanda in November.

Balido said those disasters might have probably taken their toll on del Rosario's health. (Sunnex)
