ZAMBOANGA CITY – Three New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed in a clash with government troops in the hinterlands of Compostela Valley province, a military official said Wednesday.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) information officer Capt. Alberto Caber said the clash broke out around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sitio Tibungco, San Jose village, Montevista.

He said the clash ensued when the troops from the Army’s 25th Infantry Battalion chanced upon the NPA rebels while conducting security patrol in the area.

Caber said the NPA rebels fled to different directions following a 10-minute firefight. The rebels were believed to be engaged in extortion activities.

Caber said no one among the troops were either killed or wounded during the clash.

He added that the troops have recovered a pistol and backpacks abandoned by the rebels.

Eastmincom chief Lt. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz III has directed all military units in the area to secure the communities from the NPA’s extortion and harassment. (Sunnex)
