THE Philippine Navy's new Flag Officer in Command (FOIC) assumed his post on Wednesday, a day before its outgoing head reaches the military's mandatory retirement age of 56.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala, in an interview, said retiring Vice Admiral Jose Alano will be replaced by Rear Admiral Jess Millan.

Alano will celebrate his 56th birthday on May 1.

Zagala said Millan, who belongs to the Philippine Military Academy batch 1982, is a personal choice of President Benigno Aquino III.

A recipient of various military awards, Millan is the outgoing commander of the Naval Forces Western Command and was former chief of the Naval Staff and commander of the Naval Reserve Command.

Aquino led the formal turn-over ceremony Wednesday at Sangley Point in Cavite. (Sunnex)
