No wage hike announcement from Aquino on Labor Day-A A +A
Thursday, May 1, 2014
PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III failed to announce any wage increase or other benefits for the workers on the 112th Labor Day on Thursday.
In his message during his visit to the manufacturing facility of the Integrated Microelectronics Inc. (IMI) in Binan, Laguna, Aquino said his administration is focused on job creation.
He said reforms in agriculture, infrastructure, tourism and social services have reduced the number of poor Filipinos.
Citing a report of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda), he said the country recorded a three percentage points drop in the number of Filipinos living below the poverty line since the first semester of 2012 until 2013.
The three-percentage point drop is equivalent to 2.5 million Filipinos, whose lives have improved in the last two years, he said.
In a dialogue earlier this week with representatives of different labor groups in Malacanang, Aquino immediately rejected call by government employees to pass a new Salary Standardization Law.
He said that increasing again the wage of 1.6 million state workers might result to government's higher deficit. (SDR/Sunnex)
