THE Philippine Embassy in Lisbon is warning Filipinos looking to work in Portugal against being victimized by unscrupulous individuals luring them through internet scams.

In a statement, the Embassy said Filipinos must be vigilant and cautious against dealing online with alleged companies or law firms in Portugal, who offer jobs and/or promise to process entry/visa permits for employment through payment of "exorbitant fees" by money transfer.

"The public is hereby advised to exercise due diligence and caution in dealing with unverified parties to avoid being victimized by these scams," said the Philippine Embassy.

Prospective employees, it added, should likewise be wary of job offers from individuals who ask for monetary fees for testing or processing of documents prior to employment.

Among them, it noted, are payment of fees for Entry Clearance Certificates, International Overseas Employment Certificates (IOEC) and Affidavits of Guarantee Fund, all of which are not required by Portuguese authorities.

"This is a sure sign of a scam," said the Embassy.

It also noted how there have been cases where unscrupulous individuals misrepresented real and even reputable companies in Portugal by using information on their websites but replacing their contact information.

"Business companies with international dealings rarely hire employees solely on the basis of curriculum vitae as they will always require personal interviews," said the Embassy.

The Philippine Embassy said it issued the advisory after it noted an upsurge in the number of Filipinos, who have been victimized by the scam.

Records show that there are about 20,000 Filipinos living and working in Portugal. (Sunnex)
