Snow, ice sweep Britain, stranding drivers

LONDON — Snow and icy weather have swept through parts of Britain, stranding drivers and leaving thousands of homes without power.

Snow also covered parts of Switzerland and southwestern Germany on Saturday, and up to 40 centimeters (nearly 16 inches) of snowfall was predicted in higher parts of Germany's Black Forest.

Iran's army tests suicide drone in drills

TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's army has deployed a suicide drone for the first time in massive ongoing military drills near the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf.

General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, the army's chief commander of ground forces, is quoted by Iranian state media Saturday as calling the unmanned aircraft "a mobile bomb." The drone, named Yasir according to one Iranian newspaper, has been designed to plunge into aerial and ground targets, as well as ships.

2 boys lose hands from firecracker injuries

TWO boys aged five and nine are set to welcome the New Year with only one hand after their right and left hand, respectively, were amputated after they sustained injuries from igniting firecrackers.

In a press conference, the Department of Health (DOH) reported that a five-year-old boy from Cebu got his right hand amputated after igniting an unknown firecracker.

Palace: Only TRO can stop DOTC from implementing train fare hike

ONLY a temporary restraining order (TRO) could stop the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) from implementing the fare hike on Metro Manila's mass rail transport system, a Palace official said Saturday.

In an interview over state-run dzRB Radyo ng Bayan, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said that the DOTC would continue to explain to the public why there is a need to increase the fare on Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and the Light Rail Transit Line 1 and 2 (LRT-1 and LRT-2).

As of 4 p.m., the LPA was spotted at 800 kilometers (km) east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) reported in its 5 p.m. weather bulletin.
