THE anniversary celebration of the Philippine Navy will be held in its headquarters in Palawan on Tuesday to give respect to the troops guarding the disputed West Philippine Sea, a military officer said.

Navy chief Vice Admiral Jesus Millan also dispelled speculations that the 116th anniversary will be held at Naval Station Carlito Cunanan in Ulugan Bay, Puerto Princesa, Palawan due to the ongoing tension with China over the Spratly Islands.

“This time ay ginawa natin ito sa naval forces west area of responsibility kasi its an opportunity para sa atin na maipakita sa ating mga frontline units na we are affording them the right attention,” he said.

He added that their main concern was to fulfill their obligation of developing the facilities and boosting the morale of the troops and “not for anything else.”

Millan said that the location was “strategically important” and there is a need for them to develop and enhance its facilities.

President Benigno Aquino III, commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), will attend the celebration.

“This is an opportunity naman for the President, the boost it will bring to the morale of our personnel being our commander in chief no less visiting them, ito rin ang opportunity for him to be able to see kung ano ang mga developments na meron tayo sa bagong nilapatang headquarters ng Naval Forces West,” Millan said.

There were concerns that Aquino's trip to the province and attendance to the Navy's anniversary there could further inflame tension with China, which is claiming almost the entire West Philippine Sea. (Third Anne Peralta/Sunnex)
