TWO government militiamen were killed and eight others were injured on Thursday when a grenade accidentally exploded in Mandaon town in Masbate, a military official said Friday.
Brigadier General Joselito Kakilala, commander of the Army's 903rd Brigade, said the incident occurred around 8:50 a.m. inside at the Tulda detachment in Tulda village.
"This command will conduct immediate investigation on the incident to determine possible infraction of regulations or SOPs (standard operating procedure) and prevent its recurrence in the future," said Kailala.
Kakila did not provide the circumstances leading to the incident.
However, a military report said one of the militiamen assigned at the detachment, Romy Ariola, was cleaning his rifle including those in the armory when an M203 grenade launcher was "accidentally fired."
It said the grenade exploded at the hall where other personnel of the detachment are having a lecture, or Troop Information and Education.
The report identified the slain militiamen as Sanny Reoayan and one Roberto.
The report said the injured included one Sgt. Havetacion, the detachment commander. The eight are undergoing treatment. (VR/Sunnex)
